Schedule 11, Federal Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts and Canada Training Credit, calculates the tuition credit, the training credit, and amounts transferred or carried forward.
Part 1: unused amounts carried forward from previous years (from the Notice of Assessment).
Part 2: current-year eligible tuition fees from T2202 and TL11 forms.
Part 3: Canada training credit, with the training credit limit and the amount claimed (line 45350).
Part 4: amount used by the student to reduce their own tax (line 32300).
Part 5: amount transferred to a spouse, parent or grandparent (up to $5,000 minus the amount used).
Part 6: amount carried forward to future years.
Carry-forward amounts are used before current-year amounts, and the student must use enough to reduce their federal tax to zero before any transfer.
A student with $9,000 of tuition and $12,000 of income owes no federal tax after the basic personal amount, so uses none of the tuition. Up to $5,000 can be transferred to a parent (worth $700 to the parent federally), and the remaining $4,000 is carried forward for the student's own future use.
